To my darling daughter, Alyssa:
Today you are ten years old. Wow. It amazes me how much you grow every year. And it makes me a little sad when I see you spending more time with your makeup or other older play things instead of your stuffed animals. I know time passes so quickly.
Before you were born, we didn’t know that you would be a girl. I had longed for you to be a girl, since we already spent 6 years raising your older brother. I wanted to experience the world of pink and girly and when you were born and I looked down and saw that you are a girl, I cried tears of happiness that can only be described as sheer love in a moment, so happy in my heart that I got a beautiful baby girl to love for the rest of my life!
And so beautiful you were! You had tiny petite features, small nose, beautiful eyes. You got attention everywhere because you were so cute. And a good baby too. It was so fun dressing you when you were little!
As you got older it became apparent that you were going to be a tomboy. I was okay with that, I had got 4 good years of being able to dress you girly. I never played Barbies with you, because you never ever liked those dolls. You didn’t really like dolls at all even as a pre-schooler.
You really REALLY fell in love animals very early on. You have loved stuffed animals for at least seven years now. You love animals so much that you have already asked us to help you plan to have a job someday working with animals. I am so proud of how much you love animals, and our little slice of Earth.
You love butterflies and love helping me in the garden. There is nothing I love more than taking you outside every day in the summer to look for new vegetables to emerge in the garden, and to take time to talk about how things grow or other little life lessons.
You have such a big heart. You have moments where you act spoiled, though. I think it is due to you being the only girl, so we try a little harder to make sure we show you love, since you are also the middle child.
My darling daughter, in this moment you are ten. You are so pretty and you care so much for others and animals. I know we don’t really sit on the floor and play girlie stuff but I want you to know whenever you want to go shopping for makeup, I’ve got your back, baby girl. And in another ten years, when you are starting your second year in college, I will be right there helping you decorate your dorm, and always just a phone call away
Happy Birthday my sweet Alyssa Danielle!
