I’m talking the real ones way back in the day. Before electricity. When men had to wear masks to conceal their identities as they carried on there less than stellar activites. The masks were so elaborateand obviously hand made, they did have mass production back then. And the dresses were beyond amazing in that era. Sometimes I think a little bit about Mardi Gras or Carnival when I see the masks with feathers on them. They are so pretty though!
I guess nowadays there aren’t many masquerade balls, at least not to the grand scale of the older times. These days people collect venetian masks instead of wearing them. The neat thing to me is that you don’t see masks collectors that often but when you do find them you see how beautiful the masks are. My personal favorites are the jewel encrusted sparkling ones with the stick. The kind that I could imagine Elizabeth I using at one of her grand balls. There is just something so fancy about moving the mask and tilting the head slightly to smile at the suitors that I am sure she did on occasion.
I don’t have any masks but I get the same feeling every time I see one, like I could swear I attended some masquerade ball in another life. Like I danced and dined with Mozart. Maybe that is why I am attracted to any and all period films! (Yes I am old, old enough to say as a child I LOVED the movie Amadeus!)

Sigh, I’d love to transport back to that time and go to a real live masquerade ball! That would be fantastical! I love reading historical fiction! It’d be grand to have one in this day and age. Too bad no one would know how to dance properly!
