Fix Your bumGenius Diapers!

I love Aiden’s bumGenius collection. I started off with three and just recently bought 7 more because I love them so much. I love the fit and they haven’t leaked yet in the 11 months we have been using them. BUT, as with a lot of aplix diapers, the aplix curls and gets worn out. Mine were curly, worn, and sometimes hairy and the laundry tabs were just about bare-

So on a suggestion from an online friend I emailed CottonBabies, makers of bumGenius diapers and asked for a repair kit I had heard about. The kit is free, just have to email them with how many kits you need and your mail addy. Within a couple days I got my kit. I needed three but she sent five. Thank goodness for that because I did mess up one piece!

Now you need a seam ripper, scissors and a sewing machine. The most time consuming was ripping the seams. You have to be careful not to mess up the fabric in the stretchy tabs.

Now firstly I sewed on the soft laundry tabs in place of the old ones. It got easier after the first one. I don’t have straight lines but it was a secure stitch. For the front tabs you have to sandwich the soft piece and the scratchy piece of the aplix with the tabs, having the scratchy piece face in. I found that if I sewed the aplix tabs 3/4 of the way before sticking them on the tab that it went smoother.

I reinforced the aplix that was on the tab with 3 passes and then went around the whole piece again. Nice and secure. Maybe not perfect and pretty but WAY better than they were before!

And there it is. Three fresh aplix bumGenius. And they work too! I am still a novice at sewing and was able to do this easily. If i can do it I think pretty much anyone else could too!

If you are having trouble with your Aplix, get an email to CottonBabies and grab your machine. You don’t have to hate Aplix anymore!

That is FANTASTIC!! We’ve only had our BG for about five months, but I definitely see them getting ratty like that down the road. Thank you for sharing and I love the tutorial!

How very cool that they sent you free repair kits! I will be venturing into the world of cloth diapering for the first time in December and bumGenius just got bumped to the top of my list if diapers to try out. Thanks for sharing this!

You will love them! I like the Aplix personally because my baby has a tiny waist and I can’t get snaps to fit him right a lot of the time. The inserts hold a ton of pee too so we always use them for overnights!

Thanks SO SO much for posting this! Our tabs on our BGs are beginning to wear and I had no clue that there were repair kits! I was just about to buy new diapers too, so I’m glad I stumbled across this instead since the pockets themselves are still in great condition! Awesome tutorial!

How timely! I just received my tab fix kits in the mail and was going to give it a go this weekend. I haven’t touched a sewing machine in years, so I’ve been dreading it. How nice to have some guidance!
