As you know I have a semi-professional dSLR camera (Nikon d90) and as you can imagine its heavy and not all that portable when I am just running errands. I have been testing cameras for Casio and the latest one is the Exilim EX-S7. Here is the intro right from the Casio site:
A sleek sturdy body with a casual feel, the EX-S7 offers 12.1 megapixels and a 3X zoom in a thin body measuring only 0.78 inches. Just by pressing the dedicated movie button, movies can be recorded in 720p HD quality. It also offers YouTube™ Capture Mode (upload and share videos). The EX-S7 is fresh and fashionable, making it your perfect everyday camera.
This camera was nearly identical to the last one I reviewed but with updated features, some more scene modes added and its sleeker in design. The difference I noticed is that it has a makeup function with blurred skin areas to make them appear smooth. I can see this working beautifully on a baby.
It also has the still very accessible video function! We had to use this camera as a back up at the zoo recently because our video camera batteries died unexpectedly. Its great that you push ONE button for video! And its set up to upload right to YouTube when you put the card in the card reader so its very user friendly.
It is very hard for me to test point and shoot cameras because I am a dSLR owner and though I shouldn’t, I do compare them a lot. For instance the color depth goes flat with the Casio. It has to do with the sensor and at this price point you can’t expect the camera to have a large sensor to pick up everything. Here is what I am talking about-
It performs well outdoors though, here is video we shot at the zoo:
It won’t fire off the flash if you don’t press the shutter all the way down which for ME is a huge plus because colors look much better in true light as opposed to using a flash.
Conclusion: Casio has made a great “purse” cam. Its perfect for what it does. If I had to pull out the dSLR for every shot and waited for perfection I wouldn’t have any photos of my kids! It performs well in video and outdoors. For those that like to do video there is no editing or converting it just goes right to YouTube and that is a huge plus! And at only $139.99 its a very affforable option!
Buy It: Get the Casio Exilim EX-S7 at Amazon.com! It also comes in a black finish as well.
