Are Plastic Surgery Apps As Popular As The Real Thing?

By on November 14, 2011 1 Comment

Plastic surgery has long been used by Hollywood celebrities, again actresses and socialites. Over the years, as surgery became more acceptable, it started becoming common in cities all across the country with ordinary people having eye lift surgery procedures and asking for breast lift information. Plastic surgery has now entered the technological era with the advent of smart phone apps that make the thought of plastic surgery more entertaining and more tempting.

ModYourBod allows people to take photos of them and then alter them to show how they would look with different surgical procedures. The pictures can then be sent to plastic surgeons to clearly show the changes that are desired.

BodyPlastika also allows users to take pictures and modify them to show the ripple-effects of different changes. Graphics are advanced and the images can be shared on Facebook or Twitter.

Cosmetic Plastic Surgery is an app that’s designed for people who have made the decision to have work done. With a wealth of information including rankings and contact data, this app allows users to easily get in touch with a surgeon who can make the desired changes.

These apps are popular because they’re entertaining. Seeing the changes instantly in a photo caters to the cultural need for immediate satisfaction. The ability to share the photos on social networking sites satisfies the desire to share something interesting with friends and get other opinions. Having an app that will instantly put you in touch with a qualified surgeon is simply convenient. The societal obsession with beauty, thin figures and pert bodies creates a desire to have surgery performed, adding to the popularity of these apps.

People have turned to face lift surgery to erase the signs of aging for generations. It’s natural for a woman to wonder about having implants and to even ask for breast lift information.

However, the addictive nature of these apps can encourage a woman who starts out looking at necessary eyelift surgery procedures to also consider purely cosmetic face lift surgery.

While there aren’t necessarily celebrities pushing the trend of cosmetic surgery apps, the apps really don’t need extra advertising. Word of mouth and the social networking abilities mean that news of these apps already spreads quickly between friends, especially among the teenage set. Girls, who are already self-conscious about their bodies and anxious to see something change for the better, will find plastic surgery less taboo after constantly altering their electronic image via the apps.

These apps can certainly serve a purpose. There’s a humor factor to the ones that allow alterations to pictures, however, that entertainment can quickly turn to longing, even disgust with the parts of your body you’re already embarrassed about. While the app for finding surgeons is convenient, it could be argued that it’s a little too easy. There are no current studies on the impact of these apps on impressionable young girls, but there is little doubt that the effect will not be positive. Because they’re convenient, easy and affordable, it’s clear that face lift apps are actually more positive than the real thing. The question is what effect that will have on society.
