Star Trek is a controversial topic in the world of geeks. As a family, we all love Star Trek (it was the babies choice, honest) and we are more than happy to share a happy geeky festival treasure to the world 😀
For a start, Star Trek fans love the show because it’s cool. Yet geekiness is considered uncool in some quarters.
Whatever. On this site, it’s hip to be square.
It’s also hip to dig Star Trek. And it’s super-hip to go to a Star Trek convention.
But which one should you go to — there are so many!
You could start with the convention that’s closest to you.
But for true fan cred, it’s the official Star Trek conventions organised by Creation Entertainment that you should be aiming for. You can check upcoming events here.
The Star Trek convention in Las Vegas in 2011 actually holds the Guinness World Record for the most number of people dressed in Star Trek costumes. There were 1040 Trekkies in costume that year. Sadly, an attempt to break the record at the 2012 Star Trek convention in Las Vegas failed.
But the failed record attempt could be all the more reason for YOU to attend the 2013 event, where another attempt will be made to set a world record.
The biggest Star Trek convention in the world has to be the geekiest, right? Or the coolest. Whatever. We say the Las Vegas convention is the best. We are unapologetically living it up in the Tanning Salons in Las Vegas, NV for our individual fancy dress costumes in a ‘go hard or go home’ fashion.
We’re not going home – we’re about to make history. Beautiful, geeky history.
Gene Roddenberry could never have guessed how big the Star Trek franchise would become when he created the concept in 1964. The television pilot of Star Trek was aired two years later.
One of the earliest Star Trek conventions was held in New York in January 1972. It was initiated by a tiny group of Trek fans and attracted 3,000 people, including the series creator.
After the television series came the movies. Then the spin off television series. Then more movies. The 12th Star Trek movie is scheduled for release in 2013.
Many of the actors from the original and spin off Star Trek series — The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager and Enterprise — attend the official Star Trek conventions.
About 70 Star Trek celebrities, including “The Four Captains”: William Shatner (Captain James T. Kirk), Avery Brooks (Captain Benjamin Sisko), Kate Mulgrew (Captain Kathryn Janeway) and Scott Bakula (Captain Jonathan Archer), attended the 2012 Star Trek convention in Las Vegas.
